Promote Others and You Yourself Will Get Promoted!
Here is a great way to drive traffic to your site in a way that makes everyone feel good.
I got the idea from my days in the direct-sales business. They call it "edification" but, in the business of music marketing, I call it "nice guys finish first".
What you need to get started:
- Some sort of recording software (Garageband, Cubase LE, Reaper, etc)
- Your own website (Bandzoogle, MySpace, ReverbNation etc)
- Audio interface and microphone
- A friend who is an artist (musician, visual artist, sculptor etc) and who has a website
What to do:
- Have your artist friend over and interview him/her about their newest work
- Record this interview using your recording software
- Ask him/her questions that help them show off what they do best. Make them look good.
- Inform the audience where they can buy this artist's work
- Edit the interview to cut out any dead spots or coughing etc.
- If you can, edit in parts of your friend's CD throughout the interview to highlight what they are talking about and introduce people to their music.
- Convert the interview to an mp3.
- Post the mp3 on YOUR site
- Have your friend put a link from his/her site to the interview on your site
- You and your friend each email the news about the interview to all of your existing fans and contacts
Then, have your friend do the same for you on his/her site and both of you promote that interview.
Here is how it works:
Nobody likes somebody who is constantly saying "look at me. I'm so great". However, people are very disposed to accepting your recommendation of another artist. So promote the heck out of the interview you did of your friend on your site. People will come by to hear it and might stick around to hear your stuff as well while they are there.
Conversely, if you promote a link to another site where they interviewed you, that will generate curiosity in people because "obviously someone else thought you were important enough to interview. Promote heck out of your interview on your buddy's site. He will be happy with all the traffic you are sending to his site and people will hear your music spread throughout the interview.
That is called a win-win. Here is an example of my interview with Bill Wood.
Example of the email you send out:
Come by www.darrylleewood.com to hear my interview June 2007 with Bill on his new disc "Take It".
Find out the stories behind the songs, his adventures as a songwriter, how he does what he does, and hear an exclusive new song.
You can stream the interview or download it in 4 parts in mp3 format. It is available at www.darrylleewood.com/Bill
Enjoy it and don't forget to pick up a copy of "Take It" if you don't already have one.
Regards,
Darryl Wood
I hope this idea sparks your creativity and generates lots of traffic to both of you. Keep on doing it with different artists and build up your portfolio. If you got 25% increase in traffic with each artist you do this with, just think of how many people would come by your site.
