The Origins of "Don't get your honey where you make your money"
I was working for a Fortune 100 company at the time. We used to have the heads of department come up for the U.S. to visit. They were always very postive that YOU (with a brief pause to look at the name on your shirt and to use it, with great sincerity - you know, the personal touch) were doing such a great job. The fact that I was in the lunch room at the time made me very proud of the work I was doing on last night's leftovers.
Anyway, after my prodigious ingestion of soy-chicken, it was time for the group meeting. Dave, our head of H.R., was up from Texas to talk about the very serious issue of "sex-shul Harrisment in the workplace". So with all the gusto of my former upline, he gives us the alternate title of the workshop: "DON'T get your honey (pause to scan room) where you make your MONEY". After which, he proceeded to teach us how to inflame tensions using memorable metaphors and gestures.
Needless to say, that instructional session has stayed with me. However it did so mostly because of the title.
Not lost on me was the irony that there were so many couples in the room at the time. So, over the next few months, I began asking those couples, and lots of former couples, about their experiences.
Inevitably, it started at some after-work party with some form of indulgence to excess. Then came the "beer-goggles". Then came the kids. In many cases, further excesses were needed to re-acquaint the participants with the original rationale for their domestic arrangement.
All I can say is that the best lines in the song are direct quotes.
I hope you enjoy the song "Don't get your honey where you make your money"
